Foods With DHA Along With Fish Oil Supplements Can Help Your Health

I am referring to the hoki, a bug-eyed fish that probably wouldn’t win any awards for being the prettiest fish in the sea, but is in high demand because it is so nutrient rich. Fish are one of the main foods with DHA, a very important omega-3 essential fatty acid. Specifically, cold water fatty fish such as the hoki, salmon, mackerel, sardines, and albacore tuna are rich in this nutrient.

Hoki are a deep water fish naturally high in DHA. They are found in the Southern Ocean, off the coast of New Zealand, an area that has been known to have less pollutants like mercury and other heavy metals common to many of our other oceans. These fish are harvested for eating and are also used in manufacturing omega-3 fish oil dietary supplements.

Various studies have been done regarding the health benefits of foods with DHA showing many positive results. For example, a 2006 Tufts University study of just under 900 older men and women reported that people who have higher blood levels of DHA cut their dementia risk by 47 percent, compared to those with the lowest levels. Eating fish three times a week led to these more elevated levels. A Swedish research group also found that taking fish oil supplements can cut the rate of mental decline in people who already have mild Alzheimer’s.

The greatest amount of scientific research in regard to omega-3 essential fatty acids is in the area of its heart-health benefits. The American Heart Association(AMA) has stated that omega-3 fatty acids not only help people who have cardiovascular disease, but also benefits the heart of healthy people. Their research results has shown that omega-3s decrease danger of arrhythmia which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, lower triglyceride levels, and diminish the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque.

Recommended amounts to take are varied, but most sources agree that cold-water fatty fish should be eaten two to three times a week. Again, the AMA suggests patients with coronary heart disease and those who need to lower their triglycerides take omega-3 dietary supplements along with foods with DHA to ensure they are getting the amounts necessary to get the cardiac benefits. It is always a good idea to discuss taking any supplements with your doctor first. To lower triglycerides, the AMA advises taking 2 to 4 grams of EPA+DHA per day in capsule form under the care of a physician.

The best omega-3 fish oil supplements should include both DHA and EPA and the amounts should be indicated on the label. The manufacturer should also clearly state if their product has been molecularly distilled. This is a process that separates and discards the toxins from the fish oil, leaving it safe and pure. There are various omega-3 capsules available now that are tasteless and odorless, where you won’t have a fishy aftertaste or typical “fish burp”. Try to find a supplement that is in the esther form which is much easier and faster for the body to absorb into its cells providing you with a more favorable health advantage.

Now that you are aware of the foods with DHA (especially the ugly hoki), I encourage you to be proactive by including fish and fish oil supplements in your daily diet for a healthier body overall.
